Guided Imagery
Guided imagery is a relaxation technique that purposely guides thoughts and beliefs to achieve a desired outcome. It is a process that brings you into a relaxed but alert and focused state and opens the mind to healing suggestions through visualization. It connects your imagination to your senses. With the use of music, inspiring words, descriptions and images we are able to create a new frame of mind when dealing with our challenges, such as stress, anger, pain relief, sleep disorders, preparation for surgery, pregnancy, etc. We visualize ourselves in a more positive scenario as we go along a new path in dealing with challenges that need to be addressed, then letting go of them and moving on.
We reinforce in our minds the positive imagery and the inspiring words that are specific to us by listening to them every day. Imagery works so well because the thoughts and beliefs that we visualize in our minds are just as powerful as they are real or imagined. By constantly reminding ourselves and seeing ourselves in a more positive light we bring upon our being hope and empowerment.
The best time to listen to guided imagery is when the mind is deeply relaxed, almost in a dream-like state where the subconscious mind is more receptive to learning, healing, creativity and performance. A good time to listen is in the morning when you first wake up or at night before you fall asleep. At the beginning or end of the day, which ever is best for you, let go of any distractions. Think about what really matters to you. Turn off the television, any music or phones, lower the lights and find a quiet, comfortable place to sit or lay down. Adjust the temperature if necessary. The best way to receive imagery is when you are relaxed and comfortable. If you have headphones you may want to use them.
If you find time in the middle of the day, guided imagery makes for a pleasant break, too.
When coming out of the guided imagery session take your time; let the imagery be absorbed before transitioning back into your real world. It is said the a habit takes twenty one days to be changed, so try to listen to guided imagery daily and be open to the healing it will bring.
